There's no doubt a few Vanagons will meet their fate through this program.

I would have traded in my '93 EV Weekender had I insured it for the past year. It has 200K on it and it's a little rusty in the wheel wells. It would be a good van for someone to fixup, but it's not worth $4,500. The same goes for many Vanagons.

I could also scrap my '99 EV GLS. It has nearly 170K on it, but it's such a good reliable useful van, that I hate to see it go. I think the value is just a bit under $4,500, so it's not such a great deal.

I have lots of family and friends that were hoping to turn something in under this program. None of them had vehicles that qualified. The program was smart in the way it takes the worst gas guzzlers off the road.

It really comes down to value. If your Vanagon is worth close to $4,500 bucks or more, your a bit crazy to scrap it. Most of the Vanagons that will meet their demise under this program likely would have gone to the crusher sooner or later anyway.
