Mystery solved. Otmar came by the coffee shop, drove my Westy a bit (which I let him do even though it has six weeks of travel clutter, the morning's laundry, and little squeaks and rattles that I don't even hear any more...sigh) then led me down to BugWerks/AutoWerks. They took it for a spin, listened, and fixed it right then and there. What more can I ask? The left rear axle nut was loose. Takes 250 ftlbs of torque, or something close. No more mysterious noise; and I don't have to worry that my wheel will fall off. This actually happened to me one time in a '62 Scout. This is not even dangerous in a Scout, since they only go 50 mph, and I was in the Oregon outback, I just pointed it out into the rocks and brush until it stopped. Fixing it took longer. Digression. Thanks, Otmar! See you at a Westy outing sometime.
