Clever man! Wish I'd thought of that. Wouldn't have worked on this one without some serious disassembly, though. Got some sort of anti-flashback setup, everything is shrouded, air intake through a mesh "filter," pilot only (faintly) visible through a little glass window buried down inside, sorta like our fridges except not nearly so visible. I guess it's a good idea, but I bet the service types hate it.
