Even in this weather, my '84 1.9 wasserboxer runs with the needle 2/3 of the way from the lower mark to the blinking LED. On hills and in town it goes up to about the same spot only _above_ the LED, at which point the fan comes on and it varies up and down slightly 'til I'm on the road again. I don't recall which thermostat I put in there last year.

In the winter it runs consistently down near the lower mark, even in town. I don't know what's normal.

No, the newer and older gauges should both read with the needle touching the led when the engine is at normal operating temp. Assuming a stock 87 degree thermostat that is.
