I can sort of see how *over time*, enough heat would transfer from heating element housing (the 182B is a bit different IIRC, but same idea) to exhaust flue.

Now I'm curious how that *might* affect a "cold" start on LP. i.e. given that it's not a straight pipe (AFAIK), I can sort of see how air flow might be enhanced by running on AC first. And speaking of enhanced air flow, maybe that's why there was a design change on the 182B intake/exhaust. It only has insulation/tin around the exhaust/ammonia tube but not the intake as in the pic of 182A. Maybe enclosing intake pipe with all that heat affected air flow in.

And considering that the insulation is "gold", maybe a significant manufacturing cost reduction! <grin>
