I did something similar to that on a '91 Westy. I put the fork mounts on the
pop top though, not the upper, rounded part of the hatch. I wanted the rear
wheel of the bike to be able to mount on a Yakima bar that I mounted to the
bottom of the hatch. Worked real well. I used locking fork mount hardware.
The only drawback was having to store the front wheel inside the van.
Without a front wheel mount bar, you can't use a front wheel mount to hang
the wheel from. Even though I drilled into the fiberglass top, I used
silicone sealant where the bolts went through. I'd really recommend that or
some other rust inhibitor/moisture sealant. I also put 2 of the high
pressure struts on the hatch and used one of those PVC sections on the right
strut to hold the hatch up with the bike on it.
