"And take action accordingly."   A late friend of my late Dad (this goes back a few years) formulated what began as Ben Whiteman's Felt Hat Theory, later amended to the Brimmed Hat Theory, which states that you should NEVER get behind a driver wearing one of these when in traffic.  The hat alone should be a good enough indicator, based on empirical observation, that you won't like his driving so steer clear before things even get started.   I have found this to be sound advice.   Stephen

"... to a German gentleman (he wore a hat)..."

[fuddles brow in puzzlement]

What kind of hat? A German hat? A German gentleman's hat? I sometimes wear a hat. Now I wonder if people think I'm German when I wear a hat.

This little bit of extra information leads to so many questions, not one of which is Vanagon-oriented, so I apologize for even bringing this up ... b-but others might want to be on the lookout for men wearing hats which indicate, either by the cut of their hat, or the simple fact that they are in fact out and about wearing hats at all, that they are German. And take action accordingly.
