Cool -- thanks for clearing that up; I now understand how his be-hattedness entered into your posting.

Men looked snazzier wearing snappy hats, but when oily hair went out of style and more and more people realized that they needn't dress like they were living in colder Europe, the ol' hat went away.

I've tried many hats in a effort to achieve a good look. Mrs Squirrel just says I look like Bob Hope (the old dufferish Bob Hope, not the young Bob Hope that so many in America weirdly thought was funny -- was he ever funny? my parent's generation must have desperately needed sources of humor... was there some dire humor shortage in pre-WWII America? there can be no other explanation) and that pretty much kills that hat for me.

But we digress, and it's all my fault for bring up the question about the hat in the first place, so I'll shut up.
