I used a Yakima roof rack for both the fork mount and rear tire tray. Had it on my hatch for about 5 years. Carried up to 4 bikes on it.You can modify the old style towers so that they grab the edge of the hatch just like they would a rain gutter on an old car roof. Very secure/stable way to go and of course, lockable and does not make contact with the hatch. Works just like it would if the rack were on a roof, but it's vertical. Good height clearance too. Didn't have to worry about driving into carports, parking structures, garages, etc. Down out of the wind too which is good for longer trips.
