that's strange.
just make 'em so there isn't any strong drag.
when adjusting, when you put the drum back on for a test to see how the drum
turns,
yank on the parking brake handle once or twice before testing drag - that
helps jiggle the shoes into their real resting position.
out of round drums will through everything off of course.
there is some leeway there, one tiny spot of drag isn't by itself a big
concern.
I think people are overly worried here.
For sure.....if you have strong drag on the drums putting it together, and
think ......"it'll wear in"........
too tight shoes and drums will get even tighter and drag badly once running.
But some initial drag by feel is normal, even desirable.
Be sure the parking brake cable has enough free play, so that's not
affecting things. Make sure something else isn't adding to the drag feel,
like bad cv joints or whatever.
regarding temps......
An infra red temp gun is 'the way' .........plus countless other uses in
helping to keep your vanagon healthy.
