Interesting.

Page 7 of my 1990/1991 Vanagon/Transporter owners manual states: "Key A (the black vinyl covered ignition key) is used for the ignition/steering lock, the doors, the lockable tank cap and the rear luggage compartment lid".

A note at the bottom states: "Note: The Syncro model has a separate key for the lockable tank cap".

Go figure. Exactly opposite to what I have had. Both of my 1987 Syncros used the ignition key to operated the tank cap (and it is a different cap than 2wd models).

Oh well.
