It's an easy mistake and at least your mechanic (you) is honest enough to say "I don't know". I've made the same mistake in a VW beetle a time or two.

My Bentley shows the float pointing strait ahead, in the direction of the driver. And don't be too hard on the guy, I did the same thing and had to check the book. :)

I have been working on a lot of things under my 82 diesel westy. my dumb mechanic (me) can't remember the orientation of the fuel sender when it is installed, and the Bentley photo is such poor quality I can't tell what they are referring to for the alignment. Where should the float be when properly installed, or is there another way to describe proper orientation? I need to reinstall this tomorrow.
