I would like to positively comment on the T3 Vanagon/Transporter as a tow vehicle. In terms of road handling personally I think it handles heavy trailers much better than other comparable weight vehicles. I suspect this is due to the relatively short rear overhang and on some versions relatively stiff rear suspension.

In Europe the legal trailer rating of the various T3 models are around 2000kg; that is 4400lbs! Outside the US market the T3 was sold in large numbers as a light commercial vehicle (truck or van version) and often used for towing trailers.

In terms of motor/transmission one would of course have to drive relatively gently.
