Most likely you are having a problem with the O2 sensor or the wiring to/from it. An easy way to test is to quickly cycle the ignition switch while the engine is running. If the engine runs normal for 30-seconds or so after this cycling then the problem is definitely related to the O2 sensor. What is happening is that the ECU is not seeing the signal it wants so it keeps richening the mixture. Without the proper feedback the mixture goes rich enough to kill the engine. Bad ground connections, a shorted wire to the sensor, etc are all reasons for this circuit to cause grief. I have had much assistance over the years! At the end of the summer last year after a 1200 mile trip my engine started acting up. It starts well and warms up smoothly. As soon as it gets warm, simply at idle it starts running really rough as if it is running on only 2 or 3 cylinders. Also black smoke from the exhaust. It I try to drive, or rev the engine, it will accelerate very poorly, missing terribly. I have been searching the archives to no avail. Can anyone offer an idea at to what is going on? Thanks, Finn Runyon |
