Hey Chris, I would suspect some electrical issue around the TempII sender. Try checking the wiring to the Temp II sender.  This is the sender that is clipped into the thermostat housing.  There are two wires and the connections can break or work loose.  The sender could also be going bad on you.  These are cheap enough to replace or to keep as a spare.  Make sure that you get an O-ring if you do buy a new one.  Takes 2 seconds to swap, when the engine is cool. If the wires are broken or off, the van will not start.  They may be just starting to be corroded or break, since you can start when the engine is cold. Good luck  Joel Cort Rochester NY. 89 Syncro Westy (CinnabarVan) 87 Syncro Transporter (Stella) 73 Westy Campmobile (agent orange) Founding Member of the Empire VW Camping Club & Westies at Watkins - www.westies-at-watkins.org ________________________________ From: Chris Hillios <chillios@GMAIL.COM> To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Sent: Monday, August 24, 2009 3:04:48 PM Subject: 2.1 WBX Dies when hot. Hi, I have an 89 westy that runs great when cold, however, after a trip on the highway, the van has issues at idle and eventually quits any time I come to a stop. Once this occurs, I need to wait for the van to cool down before it will start again. Any recommendations? -Chris
