I can't say "long lasting" yet, but my refurbished plastic caps have lasted at least a year.

Still look ok.

What I did:

If Mr. Squirrels caps aren't cracked, shouldn't be a lot of work. (mine were cracked) Thing is, with Krylon plastic paint and emery/sand paper etc figured in, @ $10 ea. for new ones, well....
