I believe between 0 and 2 turns it will work just fine. Hydraulic lifters will self adjust after the engine is started. I have always followed Bentley with 2 turns for my two 1.9 Vanagons. I never had any problems. There must be a reason why Bentley says 2 turns. I personally will continue to set it to 2 turns. But I do believe 1 or 1.5 turn will be fine too.
