I think you have an 83 westy with 2.1 watrboxer engien from a syncro. Regarding this fast idle..... which fuel system is on your engine ? ..... is it the completel Digifant that 86 and later 2.1's have - with an electronically controlled air idle valve and control unit, or it it runing on the fuel system that was original in the 83 van - the earlier Digijet ?

either fuel system and idle system will work on the 2.1 engine. The two idle systems are differnt from each other. Also ........which throttle body is on it ? ........the one for 83 Digiget, or the later Digifant ?

John Muir's famous Iditots' Guide doesnt' apply to water cooled vanagons in any way whatsoever. However.......the drawings, and the detailed explanations are fantastic .... this book should be THE model for do-it-yourself repairs. If you never even heard of a distributor before in your whole life, his drawings will walk you right through setting the points cap , etc. There are numberous exloded views - of entire engines......all hand drawn in black and white - and they are technically accurate down to the smallest detail. Regardless of subject matter, or vehicle application.... John Muir's Idiot's Guide is worthy of serious study ....... just for what it is, becuase as how-to books go.... it is in an outstanding class all by itself !! There is also a later version for diesel engines .......same publisher, differerent author, same format and style. A very worthy book as well..... and really ..........just to study for how well it's done.....never mind whether it's about car repair or how it might apply to your car or van. They are that good, these books. The drawings alone ........just a perfect style of freindly/funky/helpful. Scott www.turbovans.com
