A weatherproof unit that you can mount outside the van is the Ubiquiti Nanostation Loco. It's a bit more cabling, requiring one (1) Ethernet cable and one (1) 12VDC supply cable. But the thing seems to have a good reputation. See, for example, http://www.ubnt.com/products/loco.php I'm ordering one, only $49, but won't be using it in the van right away, will mainly use it to improve my wireless connection in the office. The missus and I are not retired enough to be cruising around the country leeching off unsuspecting open wireless access points.
