There are two electrical parts to the coolant light circuit. One is the coolant level control module on the fuse panel and the other is the instrument cluster itself.

When the ignition is first turned on the light should blink for 10-15 seconds as a bulb test. This control is entirely on the cluster printed circuit.

On an '84 the coolant level control module should be connected so that low coolant both turns on the light and pegs the gauge. If you are only getting the light then the printed circuit board is defective. Most likely the timing capacitor is bad.

Hi;

I just got my daughters 84 on the road and have a pesky flashing coolant light. Coolant level is fine. Operating temp is fine but the light flashes. I attempted to loop the circuit at the bottle plug but that pesky light just keeps on flashing. Ideas?

Ian Allan
