Subject: My New Bride (No. 3)
Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed

In an another post this week, someone alluded to "getting to know" a "new" Vanagon. Having recently jettisoned a 10-year relationship with my '81 Westy, kicked her to the curb and started a new life with an '84 Westy (guess it sounds like I played a little rough, huh?), I am experiencing those pangs and doubts. 10 years into a relationship, you know the gesture, the hiccup, the raised eyebrow, the subtle signs that things are not quite right. Likewise, you know the joys of the highs - the weekend you spent together in harmony, climbing the mountains, enjoying the big windshield view, the purr of the motor as you pull into your campsite or, ultimately, your driveway.

I am about to embark upon my third short journey with my new bride. We have gone over everything in this van since I brought it home and it *should* yield no surprises. But, what about that wierd "bang" from the rear-end one day- was that a tranny fault or did that get fixed with the new brake drums, wheel cylinders, etc? Why does this 1.9L engine seem to be so incredibly perky? Was it a just a great engine rebuild? What will be the next surprise? How do I read the subtle expressions of the van? How do I know when something's wrong or everything is alright? Only time will tell, I guess.

So begins another Westy marriage (No. 3) and all its joys and hopes and uncertainties. I expect I will build the trust over time. In the meantime, I will renew my AAA-Plus membership again this year! :-) And I will then head out for more adventures!

Thanks to all for allowing me back into the fold after a few years of absence. And thanks for your help, now and in the future.

Melissa Mourkas '84 Westy Honey Bee Sacramento, CA
