The reason for no aneroid was POLLUTION control. The turbo adds enough air at all speeds to burn all the diesel fuel and thus no black smoke. This engine was sold as an Eco-diesel, sacrificing power for cleaner exhaust. The turbo maintains power at higher elevations without the clouds of smoke that diesels can bellow otherwise.

Lots of people have put these in Vanagons, many change to the boost aneroid pumps for more power.
