Although my thought definitely applies to an engine dying while driving as wellas your start problem ... does this particular motor have a cam sensor on it? I have a '96 Passat that has done what you describe 2 times, but it also died while driving and was intermittent, until it was fatally dead, then would only crank/turn over but not start at all.
