That actually sounds like either a drive or contact problem, a bad polarizer or conceivably (?) a cracked LCD. From the description I'd bet on the polarizing screen. I think they can fail selectively if the wrong liquid gets to the edges. I can't remember whether it's glued on or separate. A separate one could come from another clock or perhaps be made from a scrap of polarizing film or maybe a sunglass lens ironed flat(tish).

There's at least one other VW with an interchangeable clock but green illumination (Jetta? Golf? -- somebody here knows).

The clock will do either 12hr or 24hr display, in case you want to change it while it's out.
