Of course you now have no low coolant warning system. Since the temp gauge sensor is not mounted on the engine, a massive coolant loss will not give a hi temp gauge reading until after you make steam with what little water is left in the engine. At that point the engine is on its way to being useful for melting into toy soldiers or becoming an artificial reef. You need to get the low coolant part working.

On my '84 I pulled the low level relay and that cured the problem of the 'always blinking' LED. The gauge LED still tests on start up and works.
