my 'list' is divided into tools, products we use, like CV joint grease and
gasket sealer say,
and .....Parts.
I just grab one of each fuel injection and ignition parts from my parts
pile...........for whatever vanagon I'm making the kit for.
for a waterboxer, I try to keep it down to about less than a cubic foot of
stuff..........maybe a box 14 X 14 and 8 inches tall.
ecu
temp sensor for the ecu
a complete distributor.
coil
igniter
a spark plug or two
a spark plug wire
an injector
some misc. fuel hose and clamps
a fuel pump
a fuel filter, or two if the van has both the big and the small one
a distributor cap
a distributor rotor
half a dozen misc good german hose clamps
a box of misc coolant hoses, plus a few specific ones to the engine type,
1.9 or 2..1 or diesel
a thermostat and gasket
air flow meter
one good used CV joint
a factory new Bosch 65 amp alternator off an industrial VW engine
about 10 feet of electrical wire and handful or wire splices and connectors.
- about like that.
I don't try 'too hard' . I firmly believe that if you REALLY try to figure
it out EXACTLY the right stuff, odds are you won't have the One Thing you
need when you need it .......
so I just count on random luck to create a reasonable chance I'll have what
I need. Hey......if you carry 20 self-rescue parts...........and you still
need yet something else, no one could say you didn't at least try to be able
to take care of yourself.
And .........of course..........tape, bailing wire, and a solid medium size
ball been hammer, with a slightly shortened handle. And if it's one you've
had since 1971 or so, and used 4 million times on hundreds of cars
........all the better !~ Sure got my money out of that one, and it sure
was not made in China !

I look forward to seeing other peoples minimal kits.
Pretty sure I carry too much extra stuff. Like do I *need* to carry
antiseize, chain lube, brake parts cleaner etc.? Some of it ends up
staying there for convenience when working on van. Still. I think I
need to pare it down.
Like just last week I removed a spool of #20 electrical wire, extra
wire stripper (nicer to use than the big clunky one) pickle fork,
extra CV. (really 1 spare is enough)
Bring on the minimal lists!
