if by 'loop the circuit' you mean jumpering the two wires at the connector
for the level circuit -that won't work as you found out.
Either disconnecting it or jumpering it will make the light flash.
however, jumpering it with a resistor will trick the circuit up front and
keep the light off, not that I recommend that approach.
You might have a faulty level sensor. It's easy and inexpensive to try one
of those.
You might have more than that going on too of course.
and ..........the level is up where it belongs in the coolant pressure
bottle, not the license plate bottle, right ?
Someone also once said that a weak anti-freeze mixture will make the level
sensor turn on the light too.
I don't know if that's actually true though. - but consider that. In any
case, you need a good healthy coolant mixture in the cooling system.
Could also have to do with the 'coolant low level warning control unit '
.....
current track 33 and 34, page 97.56 of the Bentley manual.
I believe it looks like a relay and is plugged into the fuse box like a
relay. I've never had to replace one, or even wonder about one.
They show it has the 'relay' in position 3 for an 86 vanagon ( pg. 97.67 .
Might be the same for an 84. I didn't see a relay location picture for an
84 so far.
Voltage at the instrument cluster also comes to mind - there's a voltage
stabilizer on the back of the instrument cluster, I like to at least
consider or check that part, for any dash or gauge weirdness.
Electrical heebie jeebies can set off that light too.
which is why ..........I sometimes will jumper the connector at the level
sensor to take that function out of the picture,.......... temporarily.
Ground wires, we're always thinking about ground connections too.
