I do think there is a sad trend toward parts made of lesser quality than
original ones, and even of lesser quality than ones we could get 10 years
ago.
The 'made in china' affect we might call it- whether from Israel, India, or
Turkey, or .......you name it .
The only clutch I have ever used on vanagons is Sachs.
When you order one these days - or at least from my supplier, or form me,
it's a rebuilt in Mexico originally-German made Sahcs pressure plate. The
disc might be totally new. The price if very decent.
I have had nothing but 100 % success with these clutches in vanagons -
period !
Since 1991 ........and counting.
Knowing what parts to use, and where to get them .........perhaps the shop
is not really clued in there, or they don't want to 'think' too much.
I will also say that I value quality in a part first, good service next, and
'low price' ...........that is way, way down the list of priorities.
So far down, 'low price' isn't even on my radar screen.
But Quality with a captial Q sure is, and good service of course.
I mean........so what if you save say, 30 % on the price, but the quality is
half of what you really want ? I belive that's called false economy.
And Luk brand cluthes - I used, or tried to use one of those ONCE - many
years ago. There was something just not right about it. Pressure plate
didn't fit perfectly, something like that ..........that's just my
experience with that brand one time, others may have a different experience.
But I've never had a problem with a Sachs clutch in a vanagon. Stick with
what works by golly !
I suspect the real truth is 'they are getting harder for us to make good
fast money on."
