Hi Al, I cross the border a lot in my VW bus, at least a couple times a year. Most recently a short trip to New York in my Vanagon back in July. When you are at the border you are technically outside the country, and you are not protected by your normal rights as a citizen. You do not have the right to have a lawyer present during questioning, for instance. As such, I would advise against ANY untruths to border guards. There is definitely some advantage in brief responses, but if you deny owning a gun and it comes up on the computer... "It's at home" would be a better answer. Very large hard drives have become very cheap in the last few years, and "The Man" is using them to keep tabs on a lot of stuff. My personal experiences with Customs and Border Protection have always been polite and professional, and I hope to keep them that way as much as possible.
