the list of what to grab is nearly endless....
front heater cores are highly valuable, for example.
I don't know how far you want to go .......but there's LOTS ....fuel tank
for example. Those go bad.
starter,
trans for sure,
fuel injection wiring harness
fuel pump
outside mirrors.
a straight rear bumper if it has one
sliding door outside handle !
oh, this one for sure - the sliding door inside panel.
( there are lots of vans with that panel missing, as they catch at the back
edge opening the door, they get torn up, people remove them, put it in the
garage or back yard - and that's the end of that door panel. I have far more
vanagons than I have sliding door panels for them.
parking brake handle - it's great upgrade to any 84 or earlier.
main coolant pipes if you're really ambitious - though the ends of them are
failing usually by now.
here's a good one - the radiator, and especially the lower radiator mounting
brackets, and the front hoses, and the radiator fan and shroud - those are
all great parts to upgrade 82 diesel vanagons with a metal radiator.
I have an 85 Vanagon with the entire interior burnt up to nothing, no trans,
no engine, no fuel tank, etc. etc. .........
.....had it about 6 years now, I am STILL mining parts off it to make other
vans happier.
head light switch - another part that goes out sometimes.
and those headlights - they might not be the best headlights there are, but
.............when a rock chips or breaks one of those lenses.......a good
used one is really valuable ! Each headlight is unique too, 4 different
ones on there. The white plastic adjuster thingeys .......they break very
easily, but those are valuable.
and .......the upper front grill.
oh, the front brakes and spindles - not that those are easily removed parts
especially - but that makes a good upgrade on the brakes for 85 and earlier
vans.
And .....power steering rack !
a good used one of those is a rare and valuable thing.
on the engine - throttle body. Worn throttle bodies can be a problem, and
there are ones you can get that are rebuilt, but a bit expensive I believe.
If you see a new or very good used one of those.
also .......any good OE type cat - those are valuable.
and more than that too !

Got a call from a wrecker that just received a C4C van. I gotta call em
back to make a pitch. My thoughts were to offer a flat price to strip the
thing of what I want, minus what they tell me not to take. They seemed
pretty cool and reasonable, this is not a u-pull place but I imagine they
might let me have my way with the van.
1) What would you offer to strips some seats, dash, inst. cluster, and
other odds and ends?
2) What pieces would you grap just in case from an 86+ passenger van?
(ecu, muffler brackets, ????)
There are no vans in my neck of the woods in any local wreckers so I see
this as a rescue and a chance to bone up on parts.
FYI
I did call the dealership and spoke with the sales manager (on the advice of
some listees and buddys that work at a dealership), he was cool, sympathetic
and said he'd check with is higher up. He actually called back and said
they felt they couldn't let anyone remove parts but he did tell me what
wrecker it was going to. After reading the c4C literature I think that
their interpretation is correct, only the dismantler/wrecker/recycler may
strip parts before crushing vehicle within 180 days. They do run the engine
with the magic stuff to disable it and it and the drivetrain must goto the
crusher.
