Subject: ELF or GL5 Manual Transmission Oil?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Hi all.

I'm changing the manual tranny oil in my '81 Westy. "Gear Oil Synthetic Trans ELF" put in at time of purchase. Shifting stiff before. The ELF oil improved shifting.

Possibly this? http://tinyurl.com/mhdhdl

Anyone using this?

As of yet, haven't found ELF or Redline locally (Vancouver B.C.), but I can get Penzoil or other common brand of GL5 75/90 easily. I'll check if they're MT1.

Darryls posts, and a Wiki article by Mike S from 08 were helpful re: GL5. Seems MT1 rated oils are tested to a higher standard, or for some things, there is no testing required.

Since 08 though, for street/hwy use, are others still getting good results with a GL5 MT1 oil?

There's a subtle noise coming from tranny right now. Marty at Foreign Auto in Coos Bay had a quick listen and suggested it might be input shaft bearing. (hopefully I'm using the correct terms) My goal is to nurse this tranny along til' I can swap in an '85 tranny/linkage or get an air cooled tranny rebuilt. Currently my tranny has no other obvious issues.

Thanks!

Neil.
