I agree. You start taking things apart and you might cause collateral damage to things that were fine to begin with. And it's not unheard of for "new" parts to be defective out of the box -- and many Vanagon parts are not "new" they are NOS or they are cheap 3rd world copies of OEM parts that are no longer made.
