hi, I've seen them not squease tightly enough to seal after a while, probably more due to corrosion on aluminum under a hose, is one factor. Plus the fiddly/hazard factor. I don't replace them with the common FLAPS hose clamp - the ones with sharp edges that can dig into a hose, that have the 5/16's hex head. Those are for emergency use in my opinion. I get really nice german ones, narrow, with a slightly turned up edge, and a 6 mm hex screw on them. I tighten those with a quarter inch ratchet , not just a screw driver. They don't get tight enough that way, and they get chingered up from the screw driver slipping out of the slot.

Interestingly, at least to me, I was just harvesting a turbo exhaust manifold and cylinder head off an 84 Jetta in a pick n' pull junkyard recently ...... and it had these 'good german' clamps, the ones I like, on all connections, like maybe they didn't used the spring clamps on that year vw perhaps.
