Scott, that metal ring's sole purpose it to clamp the end cap on the tube, against it's sealing ring. If you lived here in the east you'd have a chance to see a lot of them rusted off! :-) And no, should not matter which direction it goes, but if pointed forward it gives more fire exposure when it blows off from rust!
