Aw...vanagons aren't that bad rustwise. My round Weber grill is all enameled or aluminum/plastic except the grills. It's held up quite well with a cover. And the gas BBQ that I picked up beside the road is largely aluminum. For preserving a steel one outdoors, I'd start by a thorough washdown, to get all traces of ash and/or salt off it.
