I am reminded of the "Jerry Garcia Sad Bus" picture, of a splittie VW van with a tear coming from its "eye" (headlight).

This is how my face is upon hearing this very sad news. I wouldn't be surprised to see some coolant weeping from the headlight of my Subie-powered Syncro. I'm leaking a bit at the moment...

I am one of the fortunate ones to have been directly touched by his life and passion for keeping a good thing going.

He was (and is) a very positive influence on all of us, Subie conversion or not.

If there is an afterlife, we now know there is someone driving a Subaru-powered Syncro Westphalia there.

And, thank you, Paul, for being a major part of this wonderful enterprise.

Let us celebrate Warren's life! I can imagine a string of Vanagons (any engine or type) miles long on the freeway.

With sadness, I have to report that Warren Chapman, beloved Vanagon/Subaru community member, passed away today around noon PST at a hospital not far from his home in Mill Valley, CA.

As many of you know, Warren had been battling cancer for the last couple years, but managed to keep his spirits up and had enough strength to make it to Buses by the Bridge and Syncro de Mayo this year.

Like many Vanagon folks, Warren gave a lot more than he received...when I first met him he opened up his workshop to me and over the years provided tons of Subaru advice and gave me the confidence to tinker on these crazy vehicles we all love. Warren had a profound affect on my life.

As most you know, he moderated the Subaru/Vanagon list on Yahoo for many years, helping hundreds and hundreds of other people. He loved doing it!

--

We'll pass along information from his family regarding any memorial service, etc as it becomes available.

But his other family...i.e. us Vanagon folks, will be planning a memorial of our own...perhaps a bonfire night at the beach? Warren would like that....

Let's all stay in touch and celebrate Warren's life together soon.
