To each his own I guess. I bought a MIG for $600(paid for itself many times over) years ago and never looked back. I can weld a muffler on quicker than I can drive to the repair shop. AS far as being done right by a shop- yeah, maybe. Bottom line is the repair shop guys are trying to get done with your car as fast as possible. I have redone plenty of exhaust shop work in my driveway. Not trying to be confrontational or whatever, just my personal experience.

For my money, muffler replacement (which for most vehicles does require welding, not sure what different folks might call "advanced welding skills") is best done by the folks who specialize in that. Take it to a shop. It's not that expensive, and it's done right.
