If you are serious about pushing your buss then the answer is an engine upgrade. When I was really into air cooled VWs, there were several builders out there who could supply air cooled engines that made a lot more horsepower than the factory engine.

Kits were available to bore or stroke the engine or both. In your case, I'd recommend a big bore instead of a stroker because extending the stroke reduces your maximum RPM. Also, larger bore just requires larger pistons & jugs and in some cases, machine work to fit the new jugs.

Hi all,

If I choose to get my 81 Westy back on the road, what are my options for replacing the 2 speed manual transmission in the bus? 3rd and 4th are not good options while driving the Sierras.

I guess the question is, will type 2 transmissions from a loaf work in my bus or are there cheep 80-83 transmissions out there?
