Well, we DO use propane as automotive fuel in the U.S., and CNG as well. Been doing it for years. When I was a biology prof at University of Texas at Brownsville, the university had a number of dual fuel vehicles that ran on gasoline and propane. So far as I could tell, I was the only employee who regularly used propane. In fact, I picked up one van and trundled off to the contracted propane vendor with it. When the tech attempted to open the gate to the propane port, he found the gate rusted closed!! The reason that the university had those dual fuel vehicles was that the state (Texas) required that state owned vehicles run on both gasoline and either propane or CNG. I don't know if that is still true or not.

Compressed gases are no more dangerous than gasoline as transportation fuel. Yes, they can go boom. Gasoline can't? Hmmmm.
