The two weeks before Labor Day and the week after I was traveling in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota and Wyoming. 3,600 plus miles. With the exception of inside Yellowstone National Park (and at the WetWesties Reunion at Catherine Creek) I DIDN'T SEE A SINGLE VANAGON OR BUS, camper or otherwise! But, in Yellowstone, we saw six Westfalias. Waved at one, pulled over with the top up having breakfast, just after entering the park. Stopped and talked to three others. One was a couple from Texas driving about an '85 with an engine from a Nissan Maxima. Another from Texas that had just spent a lot of time around Washington and Oregon and had even stopped in Portland to have a Subie put in in the middle of the trip! And the third, a couple from Missoula (last name Little) that I'd swapped a bunch of email with some time back. I was walking back to Starwagen after getting some ice cream at Mammoth Hot Springs and they were peering into the windows of my rig. He turned and asked "Are you Loren?", he'd recognized my license plates. But with those exceptions, all inside the park, I didn't see a single Vanagon or Bus on the road the entire time. |
