I;m going to surmise that the rubber bits may be Room Temperature Vulcanizing Rubber (RTV). This stuff is usually entropically stable at normal room temperatures. What is it you DO with your electrical banana that would cause such degradation of otherwise stable modern 'plastic',

How does the squirrel family minimize the rattlies on those remote roads? Plastic knives?
