I would suggest, and I've been thinking about it myself... if you do build a camper trailer out of a Vanagon it will be pretty heavy.  Not sure the WBX would be so good at pulling it.  There's also the matter of stopping it.  I just towed a parts van about 50 miles in the rain on a tow dolly.  It had the engine and transmission removed.  It was still heavy enough that my vehicle (4wd Nissan Frontier) threatened to jack knife on the wet roads several times.

You would want to set up brakes on the trailer, for sure.
