Camping is generally any time I sleep in the Westy. Sometimes wild and wooly; sometimes way too civilized (like peeing out the slider in suburban San Diego a long, long time back).

We tend to get off the beaten path, usually camping in unmarked glens in National Forests and that sort of thing, though I do recall "camping" in an industrial park in Las Vegas in August about twenty years ago (sucked - won't do THAT again!).

NFS campgrounds are generally good, though a bit too neighborly; same with most state campgrounds. NPS CGs are usually tighter, though closer to neat stuff, so more convenient (if you can get a space).

I'm almost always more mentally comfortable in the Westy (I know what's happened on this mattress), even though a motel bed is sometimes more comfortable physically. I can afford to sleep in the Westy.

We've had it since 1985, and would not have been able to see a quarter of the things we have if we had to sleep in motels. We visited Expo '86 in Vancouver, have taken many trips to the Pacific NW, have driven to New York and to Beale Street in Memphis. Driven the Colorado Rockies (slowly), and have spent a cumulative couple months at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. My son grew up riding in the back (sorry Andy), and was able to actually see, feel, and touch the country he's proud to be a citizen of.

What's camping? Anytime we're not sleeping at home.

Karl Wolz
