VW does not sell the studs for the alternator bracket and I doubt the auto parts store got you anything but the exhaust grade stud which is probably a property class (P.C) 5.8. Even at McMaster Carr the best studs available are only P.C. 8.8. Just as or more important than the studs are the strength of the nuts, and if used the washers. They need to be matched and yes washer do come in grades. And do not use lock washers here. If the washer distorts the connection will come loose.

Common causes for the studs to loosen and break to begin with include belt tension, alternator vibration, (bad bearings or rotor), loose lower pivot bolt. Yes, that bottom pivot bolt has to be tight. If you can adjust the belt without first loosening this bolt it is too loose. Many rebuilt alternators have poorly balance rotors causing all sorts of extra vibration.

New to list, 1st post. My 84 Westy with original 1900 engine keeps breaking it's alternator mounting bracket studs. 3 times now. Last time, while traveling, I had factory VW studs installed by very reputable shop and mechanic Harold at Gene's Foreign Car Service and Parts Broomall, Pennsylvania. I trust he did it right yet, they are now broken again?? I have run many miles now with alternator held by adjustment arm only and very rattley. Getting ready to put new studs on again (today hopefully) myself. I have purchaced some 8mm studs from auto parts store that are rated to be very strong (sorry dont remember specs) ANY SUGGESTIONS for how to avoid this reoccuring problem??

THANKS!
