The PS / Power Steering rack replacement procedure is what led me to my need
for an alignment, since it required R/R of the tie-rods.
When ever you change the tie-rods, it impacts your toe in the alignment.
So, when I brought it in for the toe alignment, they also checked the castor
and camber, and indicated that my camber was off too.
This was NOT a result of changing the PS rack, but a result of the design
and age of the vanagon.
That is where I believe your problem may be similar to mine.
Hope this helps. sorry I should have been clearer.

I assume PS means Power Steering? I do not have power steering. Might be
the same problem anyway. Something to check on. Thanks

William,
My 84 has the same issue, and when I brought it in for an alignment last
year after changing the front PS rack,
they indicated that the negative camber was 1.5 degrees out of adjustment,
and could not be corrected beyond that without some major front end work.

For a long time now, I noticed that the edges of the tires in the front
(1984 GL) wear much more than in the back. I never thought of asking about
this before because I assumed that it was probably something to do with the
alignment. On thinking about it now, alignment normally would wear one
side. The tires look like they have been run under inflated which can cause
the edge wear but I keep the tires really up on the pressure so I am
guessing it is something to do with the way turns are made. Wear is even on
the inside and outside edges of both front tires. Anyone have any other
input on this?
William
