Bernie,

No direct experience, but here are a couple of web sites that document the Sirius radio satellite footprint. Looking at these, and some others I found, I see nothing in the description of the satellite system that suggests your radio would work only in the northern states. Matter of fact it should work equally well across all of the us, and mexico as well.

The first article seem to suggest that all the receievers use omnidirectional antennas, so that should not bt the reason for the radio shop statement. Would be best to ask the person the technical reason behind his statement,.
