Hi Loren, Why not? I drive a 1987 with a 1.9. I got it that way, and it's been through two engine swaps and it's still a 1.9. In my case the engine was stripped down and reclothed with 2.1 cooling and FI, so the only thing I am missing out on is 200cc of displacement. It works just fine, and is probably going to be easier to deal with long term than the upgraded 85-and-older vans running 2.1's with early cooling and FI...
