That's why I said I would have been happier had they just handed the money to new car buyers instead of handing them the money and destroying working cars. Heck, maybe it would help keep the mechanics who work on the clunkers busier too. I just don't believe we can destroy our way to a better future.

This is the only point I would have to slightly disagree on. Don't get me wrong I'm also not convinced this was a good program - and there were clearly many things that weren't "right" about it. I agree with everyother statement you made. The good that I have seen first hand is that many people are back to work because of this. I have 3 close friends and probably 2 dozen other aquaintances that were directly effected by this program in that they were called back to work and are working steady shifts. I have also seen an upswing in some of our manufacturing clients here at my place of employment - they are calling their workers back - and this has also increased their activity with my company - so we have seen a monetary benefit in our business as well. That being said - I also think it's highly possible this is a false benefit in that I don't see this as being a sustained increase in productivity - I mean it can only help for so long.
