I also see no difference in this and other Vanagon discussions and here's the "Vanagon specific" info I learned from this "rambling thread" so far. The cap fails because it gets leaky, probably because the manufacturer used Aluminum Electrolytic. If you want the best chance of it never failing again then replace it with a tantalum cap. It's a royal PIA to get to so you want to do it once & do it right. You could possibly just eliminate the cap but why not replace it once you go through the pain of reaching it?
