No reason not to, you can pick it up at the wire where it normally enters the cluster. Everything between there and the lights simply amounts to a wire..

But if you can scrape off the plastic that covers and protects the foils, you can just solder a wire across the break, no need to get fancy. VW made their connections with little crimp terminals that stab through the whole thing. I recommend not to solder to one of these, as it might degrade the connection.
